If you’re looking for the latest in office furniture, you might want to go to Germany. Sandler, a German nonwovens producer, recently put its latest nonwovens on display at Orgatec 2014. According to Innovation in Textiles, “In cooperation with renowned manufacturers of office furniture Sandler constantly works to perfect the sound insulating properties of its acoustic nonwovens. Sandler’s nonwoven panels put a damper on workplaces with a high noise level. Acoustically efficient back walls to office cabinets, suspended ceilings or partition walls create good conversational acoustics and a pleasant atmosphere. Printing and embossing motifs can even make these nonwovens sophisticated design elements, the company reports. Additionally, these versatile materials are also said to dampen machine noise in industrial environments.”

Sandler also decided to show off its office chairs and polyester nonwovens. As reported in the article, the chairs are ergonomically shaped and well cushioned, which leads to a much more comfortable workplace. The author writes, “Owing to its high recovery rate, the high-quality material retains its shape – no matter how many times a day we get up and sit down again. Air-permeable and breathable, Sandler nonwovens also contribute to an optimal micro-climate of the seat, for pleasant and productive working, in summer and winter, according to the manufacturer.”

Innovations from Sandler further emphasize the importance of furniture when it comes to office design projects. While it would be easy to see what’s trendy and choose those features for your office, you might not get the result you were hoping for. That’s why it’s essential to have an experienced team guiding you through your office design project.

If you’re looking for an experienced team of designers and project managers, you can’t go wrong with Office Space Planners. Our designers and project managers have decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.

Office design affects a number of aspects of an employee’s work experience. A recent article by Business Day Live’s Karl Gernetzky takes a look at how office space design affects anxiety. Gernetzky writes, “Depression was one of the most common health issues affecting the workplace, with constant distraction and disruption at the office one of the contributing factors to stress, the marketing manager at Paragon Interiors, Lucy le Roux, said in a statement. Up to 60% of employees in high density open plan offices were placed near a source of distraction such as high volume employee corridors or a printer, with global research indicating this could disrupt around 25% of an employee’s workday, she said.”

If you’re looking to get optimal productivity from your employees, you can’t risk overlooking these factors. That’s why it’s imperative to go into any office design project with a team of experts. At Office Space Planners, we have experienced designers and project managers who have decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.

Without experienced consultation, you are susceptible to overlooking nuance in your office design project. For example, consider the effects of color choice on your employees’ emotions. Mitch Finlay of Talk Business Magazine writes, “The colour palette of the office is a priority, since colours have such a direct effect on our mental and emotional functions. Avoid bold and bright colours except as accents or if you put them in a specific area with a specific purpose. For example, you may design an area for employees that functions as a sort of ‘hot desk,’ a place where they can go when they need to focus completely on a task. A space with warm walls in reds, oranges or yellows will help stimulate creativity and an atmosphere of warmth. Creating a sense of airiness and calm is important in common areas; cool blues, greens and purples will help to relax employees and welcome visitors.”

With Office Space Planners, you have access to an experienced team who specializes in a number of services, including analysis, commercial space planning, project management, and move coordination. We have a variety of clients who vary in size and purpose, including businesses in finance, leasing, high-tech, e-commerce, manufacturing, law, insurance, government agencies, and more.

Expanding your business and building new offices is challenging enough on its own. When you’re expanding from London to Ireland, it doesn’t get any easier. Yet, this is the situation Oxley, one of the biggest developers in the world, faces as it prepares to build a nearly 650,000 square foot office space in Dublin, Ireland. According to Independent.ie, “As part of Oxley’s plans, the company will develop about 645,000 sq ft of office space which would hold about 5,500 workers. The company will also construct 200 apartments there… This is Oxley’s first investment in Ireland. The firm beat off five other bidders including Irish and international developers. The tender process itself was known as ‘Project Wave’. The North Wall Quay site is located within ‘Block 8’ of the Docklands Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) Planning Scheme and has been designated under the SDZ as a block with a ‘focus on employment’, NAMA said.”

With the change of scenery from London to Dublin, paying attention to the details when it comes to office space design is even more important. There are glaring, as well as subtle differences in the cultures of the two areas that designers need to be cognizant of. The best way to account for these differences is with a team of experienced designers and project managers such as the experts at Office Space Planners.

Using a worker-centered approach to office design is becoming increasingly popular. According to The Conversation, “What research to date does demonstrate is that the design of a workplace needs to accommodate not only the type of work that needs to get done there, but also the individual needs of the people who are completing that work. There is an increasing focus on objective measurement within the workplace, examining issues such as stress and productivity using physiological and neuroscience tests. Results have shown employees can be significantly stressed with detrimental effects on both well-being and performance, though they may not report feeling stressed in self-report research.”

At Office Space Planners, we specialize in a number of services, including commercial space planning. We provide a number of illustrations to document every aspect of your project, including detailed electrical, special mechanical, A/V, telecommunication and furniture requirement drawing packages for each room in the building to submit to your architectural firm. In addition, we also provide furniture selection and layout, power pole location calculation and design for the open office. Then we review power pole/ceiling conflict and resolve issues with an updated design.

Whatever office design needs you may have, you can’t go wrong with Office Space Planners!

It’s no wonder that people like working in rehabbed industrial lofts and other old buildings. It’s not the age of the buildings, but their plentiful windows, natural light, and tall ceilings that appeal. Such places also tend to have rougher finishes—wooden floors and ceilings, brick walls, cast-iron columns. Irregular textures and natural materials are more easeful than acrylic carpet and acoustic ceiling tile.”

At Office Space Planners, we pay serious attention to these important employee needs when going into a project. With so much of a business’s success dependent on employee productivity, it’s not enough to go with the latest trends and hope they work. Specific needs must be addressed to get the best results.

We work with a variety of businesses, including businesses in finance, leasing, high-tech, e-commerce, manufacturing, law, insurance, government agencies and more. The one constant in all of our projects is that we have to be able to take nuance into account.

Alex Bozikovic of The Globe and Mail explores this nuance in a recent article titled “Office space: What does the ideal workplace look like?” He takes on trends like the cubicle and the more recently popular open office plan. Bozikovic concludes, “The new design consensus is a middle ground: Every office, it turns out, needs space for collaboration as well as some places to hide. The technology sector is leading the way. Here, innovation rules and companies are obsessed about managing their internal culture. Denise Cherry, director of design at O+A, a design consulting firm in San Francisco, is among the explorers. The firm has built offices for many tech startups as well as established companies including Facebook. Visually, O+A’s interiors are designed to cleverly express the prevailing Bay Area values of creativity and innovation. The dot-com cliché of the foosball table seems to be fading, in favour of a new formula that includes art, music rooms and custom-made furniture and design elements. Accordingly, O+A’s projects have included vintage modern chairs, neon signs, yurts and fully staffed espresso bars.”

No matter what you choose to do with your own office design project, make sure you get it right the first time with the experts at Office Space Planners. Our team of designers and project managers have decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.

New office design plans are working to decrease the sedentary nature of office work, both to improve employee productivity and health. One Dutch design studio is taking the new trend to the extreme. According to Gizmodo, RAAAF has created “The End of Sitting” office.

Gizmodo’s Sarah Zhang writes, “Instead of tables and chairs, the space is filled with sloping barriers for leaning. But if this all looks rather sparse and harsh, well, comfort is totally not the goal. ‘This could be softer, there’s no place for my coffee cup—there’s a thousand things that could be improved, but that’s not what this is about,’ Ronald Rietveld, a partner at RAAAF, tells Wired, ‘The most important thing for us is that it’s offering more activity and more productivity.’” Zhang goes on to question the effectiveness of this design, noting, “Desks, even cubicles for all their ugliness, allow us to stake a small piece of the corporate office for ourselves. It’s not chairs whose absence is the most startling in these photographs, but personal space.”

What do you think? Would you like to work in an office where you never sit? Do you think it would be a serious problem in terms of maintaining your personal space? Maybe this is the approach for you. Perhaps it’s not.

Whatever office design approach you’re interested in pursuing, you can guarantee getting it right by working with the experts at Office Space Planners.

Every week, we see new ideas and innovations in the realm of office design. However, Life Hacker’s Libby Sander believes these innovations are showing us that we have more room for improvement than many might think. Her article, “Why Office Design Still Has A Long Way To Go,” explores this reality and why office design projects that pay close attention to detail are essential. At Office Space Planners, we understand this need for experienced consultation, which is why we have a team of expert designers and project managers to make sure you get the most out of your project.

Sander points to research to bolster her argument that office design still has a long way to go. She writes, “In spite of increasing images of attractive workplaces from many large Australian companies, many of today’s workplaces are not well-designed. Poor workplace design leads to increased conflict and stress, which reduces performance and leads to employees resigning. Workspace is the second largest overhead for most organisations and can influence productivity by up to 20%. This is why organisations are increasingly exploring ways of using the environment to support performance and innovation.”

One of the biggest effects of inadequate office design, writes Sander, is that employees have a much more difficult time trying to concentrate. Brie Dyas of the Huffington Post explores one aspect that could be affecting concentration in her article “Can’t Focus? Your Office Paint Color Might Be To Blame.” Dyas asserts that bold isn’t always better, especially when it comes to office paint color. She advocates for using soft, neutral colors. These softer colors can help people focus, as well as provide other benefits. According to Dyas, “There’s another benefit to being surrounded by soft neutrals: Less eyestrain. ‘For work spaces, neutrals and softer, more grayed hues are better for concentration and preventing eye fatigue,’ says Jackie Jordan, Director of Color Marketing for Sherwin-Williams, via email.”

A recent article from ITBusiness.ca’s Sep Barkhodae asks the question, “Can humanizing your workspace boost your employees’ productivity?” Barkhodae points out, “Office design has traditionally been left in the hands of finance, operations or office management. It’s been regarded as a kind of box-ticking exercise.” We at Office Space Planners understand it’s bigger than that. Office design is a project that requires a team of experts to get a final product that best serves employees and increases their productivity.

In his article, Barkhodae uses Google as an example of a company bucking the trend of the “traditional” office. It’s “human-centred” office design has sent engagement levels through the roof, he says. According to Barkhodae, “And it’s this human-centred office design that should be implemented in all offices now, with HR pulling at the strings to help drive up engagement levels in the business. Of course, mere mortal companies have nothing like the budget of Google and so they can’t be expected to replicate this, but there are many simple steps that organizations can take to create a more effective and human-centred working space. For example, research from the University of Exeter tells us that employees who get to have some input in the layout and design of their office are healthier, more satisfied and 32 per cent more productive. So, why not poll your employees for their opinions about what their office should look like, or have an online suggestion box and voting software system so employees can vote for the best ideas?”

While gauging your employees is essential, it’s imperative that you have the right people leading your office design project. At Office Space Planners, we have those people. Our team of experts has decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture. We work with a variety of clients who vary in size and purpose, including businesses in finance, leasing, high-tech, e-commerce, manufacturing, law, insurance, government agencies and more. Our services include analysis, commercial space planning, project management, and move coordination.

Taking a human-centered approach to your office design project doesn’t mean you have to forsake experienced designers and project managers. In fact, the two approaches are compatible. Ultimately, this is more than a “box-ticking exercise.” It’s an investment in your business’s productivity. Whatever office design needs you may have, your best bet is Office Space Planners!

One size fits all just isn’t doing it anymore. Employee productivity is dependent on the work environment. More and more studies are showing that employees desire a work environment that takes their needs into account. Companies and organizations that are paying attention are reaping the benefits. Recently, The Guardian reported that Rochdale’s council building was named the UK’s best workplace. The building described as “equal parts spaceship and womb” is proof that innovation and having the right team are integral to the success of any office design project. With the experts at Office Space Planners, you too can design an office that both pleases and get the most productivity out of your employees. Archie Bland of The Guardian writes, “Mark Widdup, the council’s director of economy and environment, says: ‘It used to be a bit like Dilbert – you operated in your little cubicle. Well, now the Dilbert mentality is gone, sort of.’ That change is hardly unique to Rochdale. The cliche of the sexy office – possibly, if you are very unlucky, incorporating a slide – has become a ubiquitous feature of tech start-ups and major corporations alike. But, says Philip Ross, founder of unwork.com and consultant on workplace design, those changes are now gathering real pace in the public sector. ‘There are such huge portfolios of real estate to make economies on,’ he says. ‘There’s a huge prize. The public sector’s been a trailblazer.’ Before long, Ross says, banks and corporations will routinely be doing the same, and buildings will be ‘more and more for people and less and less for containing kit’. It’s time, he says dreamily, ‘to actuate the building’.” Despite the award, some workers quoted in the article were less thrilled about the new space, pointing to open-plan aspects of the office. Once again, this is evidence of the need to take your employees’ needs into account. The Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Douglas Sams profiles an example of this approach by taking a look at Go! Experience Design’s office. He writes, “Beavers believes Shlansky grasps the important link between the design of an office and the influence on employee productivity. ‘Variety is what it’s about,’ Beavers said. ‘You have some people who want to be extroverted and others who need privacy, and that can change from day to day, or project to project.’ Beavers added, ‘Their space is nimble, flexible, structured like an upside-down pyramid, and what they are doing is way ahead of its time.’” Whatever works for your employees, you can make sure to facilitate their needs with the help of Office Space Planners. Our expert team of designers and project managers have decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.

The open-plan office would seem like the antithesis to the cubicle environment. However, for some it’s little more than the lesser of two evils. According to a Dezeen Magazine article titled “Open-plan office designs unpopular with workers and can damage productivity,” many workers desire more privacy. As reported in the article, “More than half of employees prefer a private work space, while open-plan office workers often experience too many distractions to work effectively, according to new data. Research commissioned by British office equipment company Expert Market found that 54 per cent of workers would prefer to work in separate offices, while 65 per cent said that lack of natural light negatively impacted their mood.” This study illustrates the importance of not simply going with fads when it comes to office design. In order to get the most out of your office design project, you need a team of experts and no one does it better than Office Space Planners.

Another survey conducted by office furniture specialists Steelcase and research company IPSOS collected responses from 10,500 workers in Europe, North America and Asia. According to the survey, 85 percent of employees were dissatisfied with their office environment and were struggling to concentrate. Furthermore, as reported in the article, “Respondents were losing up to 86 minutes per day to distractions, and 31 per cent reported they had to leave their offices to complete their work due to lack of private space. The 11 per cent of workers who had more privacy and were more satisfied with their workplace overall were also the most engaged.”

In an article for Business News Daily, titled “Encouraging Productivity is All About the Environment,” Nicole Fallon writes, “In any office, having a variety of workspaces that are suited to different work styles and tasks is the key to ensuring that every employee can do his or her best work. O’Neil identified five “work modes” that office design should service: focus, collaboration, socialization, learning and rejuvenation. For example, you might want to provide standing desks, couches or bean bag chairs, private conference rooms, rooms with whiteboards, and a kitchen/lounge space to accommodate the various work modes an employee might occupy throughout the day.”

This is a lot to think about, especially for someone who isn’t a professional office designer. Luckily, the experts at Office Space Planners have you covered. Our expert team of designers and project managers have decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.

These days, when you hear about Reddit in the news, it usually has to do with something being leaked that shouldn’t have been. The latest controversy from the social media power, however, comes from the company’s offices. Recently, former CEO Yishan Wong left the company and now it’s coming to light that reason may have been because of office space.

Specifically, according to ABC News, “Reddit’s recently departed CEO says a disagreement over office space led to his resignation, but the job was already ‘stressful and draining.’ The headquarters of the popular Internet company, with an audience of 174 million people, is in San Francisco. But former CEO Yishan Wong wanted to move the company to Daly City, about 10 miles south.” When it comes to why Wong wanted to move the office, ABC points to a quote from Wong on Quora, where he says, “I feel the board is a very supportive and friendly one, but we had a strategic disagreement wherein I felt that locating an office in San Francisco proper is an incredibly difficult thing given the strains the city is facing and the high rents it imposes on employees who wish to live close to the office.”

The bevy of startups and the issues in the city are certainly fodder for plenty of office discussion and more importantly, distraction. It’s quite understandable how this could drain someone. According to Lisa Evans of Fast Company, “Recent survey data from Cambridge Sound Management revealed the impact of noise on productivity, which will likely come as no surprise to those of us working in open offices. The survey revealed nearly 30% of office workers are distracted by coworkers’ conversations. These distractions appear to impact men more than women, with one in three men saying they were distracted by noise at work, compared to one in four women.”

Distractions and potential stressors are very important to keep track of when planning your office space design. If you don’t have professionals to assist you, you could be at the risk of losing potentially indispensible employees. With the help of the experts at Office Space Planners, you won’t have to worry about that. Our expert team has decades of combined experience and education in the areas of interior design, space planning, computer aided design, drafting, corporate office relocation management, project management, ergonomics and systems furniture.
